What we actually do

We buy vehicles — cars, vans, utes, 4WDs, trucks and buses — and we take them apart. Every part worth keeping is pulled, tested, cleaned and racked. Then when a workshop rings needing a gearbox for a 2012 Corolla, we have one, and we know it works.

That sounds simple. The reason it isn’t is identification. A part that fits one model year and not the next is worse than no part at all: it costs the workshop a morning and costs us the customer. So over 50 years the business has specialised, and specialised again, until it became seven separate counters — one for Japanese passenger cars, one for trucks, one for 4x4 and commercial, one for Holden and Ford, one for Korean makes, Toyomaz for Toyota and Mazda, and EKW Prestige opening soon.

The person who answers the phone at each of those counters does that make all day. They can see group stock across every division while you’re still talking. And if we haven’t got it, we go and find it — that has been the standing promise here for decades.

The original circular economy

A recycled part is a part that was already built. Every engine, gearbox, door and panel we put back into a vehicle is one that doesn’t need to be manufactured, and one less vehicle sitting in landfill. We have been doing that since 1976 — long before anyone called it a circular economy.
